Anthrax Take The Music Back

Our old pal John Bush recently called in to give the KNAC.COM a glimpse into how the new Anthrax album is shaping up. Bush joined his Anthrax bandmates in New York a couple month ago to begin writing and demoing material for the effort, taking only a short break to perform at the Twisted Sister reunion benefit, dubbed “New York Steel,” on November 28th the Hammerstein Ballroom. For that gig the band donned white suits ala Devo that read, “We’re Not Changing Our Name.” The concert served as a benefit for the victims of the September 11th World Trade Center tragedy. Since then, to quote Mr. Bush, “Anthrax has been a busy band.”
According to Bush, the band is holed in a New York studio and will be tracking drums all this week before taking a short break. Next week the band will regroup and begin recording guitars and bass before taking another short break for Christmas. “After we break for the holidays and hopefully have our basic tracks done, then we go out on the Judas Priest tour and get a chance to reevaluate what we’ve done so far,” says Bush. “Then we’ll start the vocals after the tour, kind of like we did on Volume 8 after the Pantera tour, four years ago.” Bush also confirmed some songs titles, including "Refuse To Be Denied," "Black Dahlia," "Superhero," "What Doesn't Die," "Strap On My Old School," and "Taking The Music Back," the likely title track. This new album will mark the debut of the band’s new lead guitarist Rob Caggiano, who made his live debut at the New York Steel benefit.
In October, guitarist Scott Ian called in as the band first entered the studio and gave us a hint as to the sound of this new album. "They all have super heavy riffs. It seems like a lot of bands, beside Pantera, have gotten away from heavy riffs, with all this one note melody stuff. We are returning to big fat riffs and really great grooves. We've album ready topped our last album, Volume 8." The host of VH-1's Rock Show also noted that all the members of the band are contributing to the writing of this effort, unlike many of their past albums, where drummer Charlie Banante has written all of the lyrics and music. "All of us are collaborating on this one, it's really great!"
