Sefany Jones Reviews An Exclus

On September 1st, 2003, Motorhead was officially inducted into the Hollywood Rock Walk of Fame at 3pm at the Whisky A Go Go on Sunset Blvd. in Hollywood. Lemmy, Phil Campbell and Mickey Dee immortalized their handprints in cement, which will later be laid in front of the famous Guitar Center just up the street.

To celebrate this honor, Motorhead performed later that evening at the Whisky. For those of you who have never had the privilege of setting foot into this legendary venue, you must know that this is an extremely intimate setting, and a very small stage.

I don’t think it’s necessary to rehash any Motorhead show; these guys have been around since half of us have been born and if you haven’t seen them yet, then you seriously need to check yourself. I’ll just stick mostly to the facts on this one!

First of all, this place was absolutely packed to maximum capacity, which I’ve been told is 350. It’s a fairly small floor in front of an even smaller stage. There is a staircase to the left of the stage that goes up to a 180 balcony overlooking the stage. There’s a bar on each level. That’s pretty much the whole venue!

However, walking in this time, something was a little different than the other shows I had been to in the last few years. Oh… I see… there are big ass Marshall stacks piled up on each side of the stage to the ceiling! I didn’t count them, but I’ve never seen a setup like this before at this club! I’m talking massive ouput here.

As the lights finally went down, and Motorhead kicked in with “We Are Motorhead,” the entire place shook with a vengeance! I ran onto the floor to begin taking pics, but the whole floor erupted in maniacal chaos and I was shoved left and right, people were smashing into one another, everyone was clawing to be up against the stage (there is no barricade here) and it was just pure insanity. I could barely get my camera up for three seconds without being bounced 10 feet in any given direction. I was not prepared for this sort of craziness, as it was mostly industry guest list, with only a few tickets being sold to fans.

Motorhead ran through a heartpounding set, including favorites such as “God Save the Queen,” “R.A.M.O.N.E.S.” and “Damage Case.” Mickey Dee did a wicked drum solo, then a bit later, drummer Eric Singer (Alice Cooper, KISS) came out and sat in on “Going To Brazil.” Singer had given a speech earlier at the Rock Walk ceremony, so it was no surprise to see him show up on stage!

After wrapping up with “Iron Fist,” Motorhead took the stage one last time to pound out encores “Bomber,” “Ace of Spades” and “Overkill.” I was completely and utterly deaf when the house lights went on.

I’ve seen Motorhead a bunch of times in the past, but there’s nothing like seeing them in a club the size of a townhouse. Phenomenal…
