Carcass To Finally Release Long-Awaited Choice Cuts Compilation CD By Sefany Jones, Contributing Editor Tuesday, May 11, 2004 @ 12:25 AM
Earache Records, in cooperation with Carcass, is proud to announce the
release of the long delayed Carcass compilation, Choice Cuts.
Originally intended for release in 1999, this 'Best-of' compilation was shelved indefinitely by the label following the news of drummer Ken
Owen's critical illness. (After suffering a sudden brain hemorrhage in
1999, Owen spent ten months in a coma, followed by a long period of
rehabilitation.) Some promo copies of the original Choice Cuts were manufactured but were immediately withdrawn from circulation, in
compliance with the band's wishes. In the intervening years, fans of the band have repeatedly asked when the release would see the light of day, but with Ken still very ill it was deemed inappropriate to issue the collection. Still the questions and requests concerning the release continued...
After running a retrospective interview last year on Earache.com with
vocalist/bassist Jeff Walker and a much improved Ken Owen, Earache
approached the band with the idea of finally, officially, releasing
Choice Cuts'. As a result, Choice Cuts will now be issued in its entirety under the coordination of Ken Owen, who has slightly amended the original tracklisting and will undertake a full interview for the release, to be included in the liner notes of the album. Owen's interview covers the band's career, his critical illness and ongoing recovery, as well as the recording of the band's two Peel Sessions, which were recorded in 1988-90 for BBC Radio One's famed DJ John Peel, and are included on Choice Cuts for the first time on Earache. The interview will be complemented with material from Owen's personal archives as well as unseen photos from the Earache archives.
Choice Cuts documents Carcass' extraordinary influence on the
international metal scene, from their origins as gore-grind pioneers to
their later status as melodic death metal kings, until their split in
1996. From the raw, vile assaults of Genital Grinder and Exhume to Consume to the majestic anthems of Buried Dreams and Keep on Rotting in the Free World, Choice Cuts provides a comprehensive view of Carcass -- the band that slaughtered, chopped, diced, chewed up and spit out the curve, rather than merely staying ahead of it. Perhaps rivaling the Beatles and the Rolling Stones as the most influential band ever to arise from the UK, Carcass left an indelible stain on the face of metal; for old fans and newcomers alike, Choice Cuts is the ultimate compilation of this legendary band's noise.
