Unlike another reviewer of Megadeth, I was not in the least turned away by certain members not being in the ‘Deth line-up.

Dave Mustaine and his band, if you want to call it that, sounded amazing and put on an amazingly energetic show. I’ve seen Megadeth twice before, and both shows seemed tame compared to this one.

Exodus came on, shockingly, at 7:55… five damn minutes before the set start time! For anyone who has ever attended concerts knows, that is unheard of. After a fast-paced 40 minutes from Exodus, in which some dude in the crowd yelled between songs, “Toxic Waltz. Play Toxic Waltz,” Dave took the stage and surprised me by opening with “Blackmail the Universe.” Most ‘80s metal bands the last few years have stuck to their bread-and-butter by playing the “oldies.” It was nice to see here, Dave feels strongly enough to play, and play lots, of new material. In all, they played seven songs off the new CD (which rips).

I was surprised to see most of the solos performed by the new fill-in guitarist (don’t know his name), but he did a great job and the whole band sounded precise throughout. Dave didn’t talk much between songs, unlike Phil Anselmo who never shuts up for Superjoint Ritual, but Dave did mention about the metal community being very tight-nit (even encouraging all of us to greet those next to us) and how the last time he was scheduled to play in Seattle, it was 9/11.

The set list included the favorites like “Hangar 18,” “In My Darkest Hour,” and “Symphony of Destruction.” But Dave gets “two thumbs up” from this reviewer for adding “Tornado of Souls” and “Bad Omen.”

The sound all night was loud, but never over-the-top and no one seemed to drown out anyone else. As I mentioned, Megadeth plays a very clean, precise style, and it was awesome to hear Dave back to his original form.

Megadeth played for two hours (see set list below) and was sure as hell worth the $27.50 + fees I paid. If they come to your town, check ‘em out! You won’t be disappointed.
