Rumors have been running wild this week that, disappointed with the promotion and reception of it’s reunion album Beyond Good and Evil, the Cult have broken up once again. Reports that drummer Matt Sorum has confirmed the split in public (though not officially) have also been circulating. The fact that Sorum is readying a solo album also adds fuel to the fire.
Well, finally someone within the group has posted an official statement regarding the present state of the band. Bassist Billy Morrison recently posted a note on the BBS board www.thecultnet.com confirming that the band are “on ice.” Morrison is quick to say that that this “does not mean split up” though. “It means Ian [Astbury] and Billy [Duffy] are doing other things,” says Morrision. “As the new guy, I consider myself lucky to have been able to be a part of such a great band. If I get the phone call to play, I'll be there. I always said I was loyal.” In the meantime, Morrison states that he is working on new material and will be putting together a new band. However, he makes sure to ad that “I sincerely hope that the Cult want me involved in the future… and I hope we will meet again on the next Cult tour.”
