Great White Tragedy Spawns Legislation By Newsferatu, Writer Tuesday, February 21, 2006 @ 5:49 PM
State Rep. Curry Todd (R-Collierville, TN) and Sens. Tim Burchett (R-Knoxville, TN) and Jamie Woodson (R-Knoxville, TN) Tuesday announced they will sponsor legislation to require training, testing and certification for those who use professional fireworks, pyrotechnics or special effects. The bill is backed by the Tennessee State Fire Marshal and the Tennessee Fire Chiefs Association.
"We require plumbers and electricians to be certified or licensed so we should certainly require those using explosive pyrotechnic effects to demonstrate expertise when thousands are in attendance,” said Rep. Todd. “We are one of very few states who have not yet established requirements.”
“People who attend events with fireworks and other pyrotechnics should know there is a high degree of professionalism and concern for safety,” said Sen. Burchett. “We need to raise our standards before something happens in Tennessee that is similar to the horrible accident in Rhode Island.”
“With this proactive effort to improve public safety in Tennessee, we have the opportunity to prevent potentially tragic accidents in our great state,” said Sen. Hagood.
On February 20, 2003, 100 people died in a fire at a Rhode Island nightclub caused by the pyrotechnics set off by rock band Great White. The tragedy has spawned legislation in many states. Issues surrounding public safety have grown as Tennessee has become home to NFL, NBA and NHL franchises along with venues throughout the state hosting concerts and events nightly.
