I finally got to see the classic line up of Anthrax perform, and it was awesome. There were a lot of older types, like me, who were teenagers in the band's heyday, teens, and even some kids.

(Joey) Belladonna hit every note, and got involved quite a bit with the audience. He was having a great time. Dan Spitz, an underrated guitar god in my opinion, nailed every solo.

I have to say the rhythm section utterly dominated in their own right. Charlie B. (Benante), drum wizard and wildly animated bass master Frank Bello held it together and of course, on rhythm guitar was Scott Ian, who let us all know what it is to thrash.

And the audience knew every word to every song, when they were not moshing the hell out of each other.

The set list was a special bonus as they did almost all of Among the Living.

Here it is:

  • Among the Living (Holy shit. Fucking great)
  • Caught in a Mosh (Amazing; the pit exploded)
  • I Am the Law "This goes out to our favorite cop"
  • Efilnikcufesin (N.F.L) (A fucking classic. Loved it)
  • A Skeleton in the Closet "This song defines THRASH METAL"
  • Indians (Joey did not bust out the headress, but awesome anyway)
  • One World "As true today as when we wrote it 20 years ago"
  • ADI/Horror of It All (Extended ADI solo by Spitz, very cool)
  • Intro to Imitation of Life (Wish they played the whole thing)
  • Got the Time (I think there is a law that they have to perform this song every time)
  • Be All, End All
  • Antisocial (See above)
  • Medusa (Dedicated by Joey to "bitches")
  • Metal Thrashing Mad
  • Bring the Noise "We started this shit, and we're ending it"
The venue had good acoustics and lighting, which is always a bonus. Beers were $5.

The opening act, Neverset, hails from Dallas and managed to win a lot of the crowd over by the time they were done. They had that whole two vocalist Emo screaming and chunky riff thing that is very popular nowadays. Their drummer knew his shit behind the kit, though. The bassist kept yanking his cord out and would periodically go back to plug it in.

All in all, they were good, although I must say they reminded me of the Metal by Numbers video.

Setlist:

  • My Scars
  • Stand Up
  • Don't Wanna Blow You
  • Falling Away
  • Breathe
  • Wake Up
  • Headache
