The Surface Seems So Far Tour seems to be the one spot of sunshine to grace Idaho Falls, Idaho during an exceptionally gloomy spring. Despite days upon days of pouring rain, fans flooded the Mountain America Center to soak in an excellent show featuring NONPOINT, P.O.D., and SEETHER.

NONPOINT kicked off the night with their trademark high energy and captivating stage presence. Always a crowd favorite, lead vocalist Elias Soriano whipped his signature dreadlocks through the air with intensity. Drummer Robb Rivera, as always, had his kit positioned sideways for maximum visibility, adding to the dynamic stage visuals. Rounding out the band were rhythm guitarist Rasheed Thomas, bassist Adam Woloszyn, and lead guitarist Jaysin Zeilstra.

The band tore through a seven-song set that included heavy hitters like "Breaking Skin", "What a Day" and "Chaos and Earthquakes". While seven songs aren't nearly enough to showcase the full force of NONPOINT, they made every second count. Their standout cover of Phil Collins' "In the Air Tonight" remains, in my opinion, one of the greatest covers of all time. They closed with the anthemic "Ruthless" and fan-favorite "Bullet With A Name", leaving the crowd hungry for more. NONPOINT continues to prove that they deserve far more than just an opening slot.

Setlist:

  • "Breaking Skin"
  • "What a Day"
  • "Chaos and Earthquakes"
  • "Dodge Your Destiny"
  • "In the Air Tonight" (Phil Collins)
  • "Ruthless"
  • "Bullet With a Name"
After a brief intermission, San Diego Christian rockers P.O.D. took the stage, launching straight into the explosive "Boom". Fresh off their appearance at Rockville in Daytona Beach, Florida, there were no signs of jet lag as they delivered a high-octane set. Like NONPOINT, P.O.D. brought a rap-metal vibe that energized the crowd.

Frontman Sonny Sandoval performed with fierce intensity, headbanging his dreadlocks in rhythm with the thunderous beats from bassist Traa Daniels, guitarist Marcos Curiel, and drummer Wuv Bernardo. Their nine-song set was a trip down memory lane, packed with hits like "Satellite", "Youth of The Nation", and "Southtown", which triggered a full-fledged mosh pit. They closed with "Alive", a reminder of why they've stayed relevant for over three decades.

Setlist:

  • "Boom"
  • "Satellite"
  • "Drop"
  • "I Got That"
  • "I Won't Bow Down"
  • "Youth of the Nation"
  • "Southtown"
  • "Afraid to Die"
  • "Alive"
South African rockers SEETHER, once known as SARON GAS, took the stage next. Since their 1999 debut, they've stood out from the nu-metal crowd with eloquent lyrics that dig deep, layered over grungy guitars and pounding drums. Their opening song, "Gasoline", from their first album Disclaimer, set the tone for a setlist that felt like a stroll through their greatest hits.

Fans were treated to staples like "Truth", "Country Song", "Rise Above This" and "Fine Again". A tender acoustic version of "Broken", the famed duet with Amy Lee of EVANESCENCE, offered a moment of stillness before the show ramped back up with "Let You Down" and "Dangerous". The only song performed from the new album The Surface Seems So Far was "Judas Mind", which was disappointing given the strength of that release. They wrapped the set with "Fake It" and "Remedy".

Musically, SEETHER was flawless - every note intentional and polished. But the performance lacked engagement. Shaun Morgan remained shrouded in darkness, positioned at the side of the stage, while the best lighting ironically illuminated drummer John Humphrey. Guitarists Dale Stewart and Corey Lowery occasionally emerged from the shadows, but the band largely remained visually disconnected from the audience. Transitions between songs were vague and meandering, consuming time that might have been better spent adding to the 13-song setlist. After the high energy of NONPOINT and P.O.D., SEETHER's more reserved approach fell flat, making the finale feel underwhelming.

Setlist:

  • "Gasoline"
  • "Truth"
  • "Country Song"
  • "Rise Above This"
  • "Nobody Praying for Me"
  • "Fine Again"
  • "Broken"
  • "Wasteland"
  • "Let You Down"
  • "Dangerous"
  • "Judas Mind"
  • "Fake It"
  • "Remedy"
Despite the lackluster headliner, The Surface Seems So Far Tour was a welcome escape from the monotony of the real world and a great opportunity to spend a night out with those you love. As always, I'm incredibly thankful we have a local venue like the Mountain America Center that continues to bring diverse and exciting acts to Idaho Falls. Even though the evening ended on a quieter note, the opening performances and quality of the musicianship made this show well worth attending.
