It’s the day after Christmas and like a lot of people, I’m tired and hung over. I’m trying to get up the motivation to take the 15 minute drive over Laurel Canyon down to Sunset to catch Ratt on their brief, “Invasion of Your Holiday Tour.” The latest incarnation features ex-Quiet Riot guitarist Carlos Cavazo, who stepped in when John Corabi recently quit. Carlos was briefly in ex-Ratt bassist Juan Croucier’s Dirty Ratts and quit that gig to join the real Ratt. I was curious what the band sounds like with him playing rhythm guitar to the awesome and underrated Warren DeMartini.

I decided to go, and was unfortunate enough to get there while the openers The Donnas were still playing. Somebody needs to put the fat bass player chick on a diet. A homely, less talented all female band I’ve never seen. They make Vixen sound like Led Zeppelin.

At 10:15 the lights went down and Ratt opened with one of the loudest, heaviest sets I’ve ever heard them play...and I’ve seen Ratt at least a dozen times since 1984.

The band opened with “Never use Love” [off Invasion of Your Privacy]; a cool song that I’ve never heard them play live before. Again, I can’t emphasize enough how guitar heavy and loud they were. They went straight into “Back for More” and then “Lovin You’s A Dirty Job”.

By the third song into the set, I was getting the vibe that the band hadn’t put enough rehearsal time in. Things started sounding very sloppy and Warren kept covering his right ear; a sign that the band was playing so fast that he was trying to figure out where they were. I also noticed Robbie Crane having the same issue at times. Carlos seemed to be playing faster and the rest of the band was playing catch-up.

The set list was full of some rarely heard classics like “Sweet Cheater” and “You Think You’re Tough” but the band hasn’t quite gelled with Carlos Cavazo. I’m not sure this is a good fit unless they reign him in a little. There also seemed to be very little, if any chemistry between him and the rest of the band. My other complaint is Stephan Pearcy and his, sing every other lyric and add new ones, like Vince Neil.

Overall I give the new version of Ratt a 7 out of 10.
