Rock N Roll Roast Of Zakk Wylde In Anaheim By DJ WILL, KNAC.COM Personality Thursday, January 26, 2012 @ 3:19 PM
Guitar World magazine hosted the first-ever Rock & Roll Roast with inaugural honoree Zakk Wylde who was a good sport getting serious verbal razors up on stage here at the Grove!
The event kicked off the opening night of this year’s NAMM Convention down in Anaheim, CA and ironically this would be my first night of 3 in a row here at this venue from the Dean Guitars party the next night to my annual Schecter Guitars function on Sat but this was different for many reasons. I’ve watched TV roasts in the past but having musicians as the focus getting ripped into like Gene Simmons was prior to this takes on a new meaning of brutal topical subject matter that hits close to home for those of us in “the biz”, but all in the name of fun.
Jose Mangin from XM/Sirius got things started with some introductions followed by Editor in Chief Brad Tolinski of Guitar World, then some great guitar giveaways by Jim Rosenberg, President of Epiphone and then a serious presentation of The Music Cares Charity for which a portion of tonight will go towards.
Roast Master Sharon Osbourne who was relentless in her 20min opening on the dais was then followed by comedian Jim Norton, Chris Jericho, Brian Posehn,Scott Ian, Corey Taylor,Jim Florentine,Duff McKagan who had more of an anecdotal story about Zakk that led up to an ending joke then it was the “NJ Devil’s” turn to fire back and let everyone have it. Ozzy was scheduled to appear but was in-studio working on the Sabbath record.
Intermixed with the Roast were insane video tribute montages by James Durbin, William Shatner, Steel Panther, Randy Jackson, The Ultimate Warrior, Rob Halford, Gus G and “Stone Cold” Steve Austin.
There is just no way to paraphrase half of what was said and half of what was seen inside the event but just know for those of you that weren’t there everyone’s material destroyed and everyone GOT destroyed in the process!!
It was 4 plus hours of joke after joke of thee most filthiest, evil, dark material I’ve heard in quite awhile and without knowing who wrote what for whom, bottom-line a great job by all of the writers.
Even though the Zakk Roast was filmed it was not taylor made for any major networks because of the massive amount of *bleeps* and editing that would have to take place if ever considered! Its going to take one of the many cable channels brave enough to take a chance and air this, if not then hopefully straight to DVD one day.
Until then there are plans to do it again next year and one can only wonder who could be in the “cross hairs” for the follow-up.
Has to be a long ass list.
Dj Will
My thanks to Joseph at Rogers & Cowan, Josh Bernstein, Nick John at RSE, Revolver, Guitar World & Epiphone
